Franschhoek must be one of the most beautiful places in South Africa. It is a small town in the Western Cape, about 1 hours drive from Cape Town International Airport. The town is almost surrounded by mountains, which makes it extremely picturesque. It was founded in 1860, about two centuries after the French Huguenots settled in the area (c1680’s). Some great wineries and restaurants can be found in this beautiful town. One of the finest restaurants is Le Quartier Francais, voted as one of the top 50 in the world. Despite the small size of the town, it is worth much more than a day visit. There are many excellent accommodation options on offer and quite a lot to see and enjoy. I visited Franschhoek on several occasions before and recently spent a weekend in this beautiful place.

If you want to know more of the history of the French Settlers in South Africa, do visit the Huguenot Monument and Museum. The town can easily be explored by foot, as it is small and easy to negoatiate.
