A Very Friendly City

by PierreZA - last update: Jan 20, 2008

A wonderful city, with a small town feel

Old Settlers Houses on Donkin Hill
Port Elizabeth (PE) is a city with origin of British Settlers. They arrived in 1820. Sir Rufane Donkin and his wife Lady Elizabeth could be called the founders of this very nice place. At that stage it was uninhabited. The city lies in Algoa Bay. Bartholomeus Diaz, the Portugese explorer passed here long before the city was born. He planted a cross some kilometres from where PE (as it is known) actually developed.
There are many reminders of its British roots, places like South End, Norh End, Kensington, Holland Park etc.
Although not the capital, it is by far the biggest city in the Eastern Cape, and the 5th biggest city in South Africa.
Port Elizabeth can also serve as the gateway to the Garden Route. There are many daytrips from PE, example The Addo Elephant Park, Jeffreys Bay,
Baviaanskloof etc.
A easy city to live in, and one I will always return to.
PE
