Alappuzha Travel Guide: 56 reviews and 250 photos
I only spent a day and a night in this pleasant town. The town is easy to negotiate. There are two main canals (north and south), which makes it easy to orientate yourself.
Alleppey (as most people still call the place) seems to be the centre and main area to organise backwater trips. There are plenty of houseboats and tour operators to choose from.

If you have another chance just do a trip by the local ferry on the back waters.I ahd a great experience in 97doing a 2 hr trip from Kottayam to allepy for a sum of Rs 15/- and got to meet some fantastic malayalees!
lonely planet hasn't updated the restaurant page for a long time.It was the only decent one in 2003
