BEACHES: Chowpatty
  • Tip Rating:
  • From early evening this beach is transformed into a festive area the atmosphere is great.
Many families come down to visit the beach. There are great food stalls selling Belpuri – do try this!
There are also massage wallas from whom you can get a feet or head massage for about Rs50.
There are many policemen around, which make it a very safe area at night.

GATEWAY OF INDIA: For the atmosphere
  • Tip Rating:
  • Situated at the tip of Apollo Bunder.
It seems that this is a major tourist attraction for locals as well. Try to dodge the balloon sellers and postcard sellers. There is quite a festive atmosphere at night with many visitors to the area.
It is also here from where boat rides departs
Interesting architecture and it is nicely lit at night.

    VICTORIA TERMINUS: Majestic Railway Terminus
  • Tip Rating:
  • Very extravagant and impressive. A mixture of different architectural styles.
It is listed as a Unesco World Heritage Site.
It is said to be the busiest station in Asia.
Most probably the most impressive building in Mumbai.
It is now called Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST)

  • The home of Gandhi, when he stayed in Mumbai.
It is now a museum dedicated to his life.
Not very spectacular, but worth a visit.
I did find the pictures of his stay in South Africa very interesting.

  • An upmarket area of Mumbai. There are quite a few sights and places to visit.
A trip to Malabar hill is usually included in the city tour offered by tonts at the Gateway.
Do visit the jain Temple, Hanging gardens, and the Bangango Tank. The views from Malabar hill is spectacular.

Things To Do: Mahalaxmi Dhobi Ghats
  • Tip Rating:
  • Something quite different! This is where a lot of Mumbai’s laundry gets done.
I don’t know how the keep track, as there are lines and lines of white shirts etc.
You can get good views from the bridge.

  • Colaba is a great area to spend some time.
Although it is the main tourist area, it is still very typical of India city life.
You will find street markets, restaurants, bars, hotels of all sorts, emporiums, movie houses, services. McDonalds (if you have to), churches etc etc here.
It is very lively and does not go to sleep untill the early morning hours.
This is also where you will find the Gateway of India, and boat trips to Elephanta Island.

  • Before I went to Mumbai for the first time, I watched a documentary on Mumbai, where they showed how the Dhaba-wallah system works. If you go to the Chuchgate station area around lunch time, you will see many men with white Nerhu caps, on their way delivering tiffins (lunch boxes).
This is apparently a very old system, used for centuries.
    They are also called tiffin-wallahs

    Things To Do: Crawford market
  • Tip Rating:
  • When I visited Mumbai the first tome, I fall for a tourist trap here at Crawford market. A ‘guide' approached me – showed a sign (very old) which states that you need a guide to visit the market. Well that was many years ago the case!
It is a nice market to visit with great fresh produce.
You can also get your spices, rice and lentils there.
If you feel the need you can visit the livestock market.

    Things To Do: Oval Maidan
  • Tip Rating:
  • I have nerver seen so many cricket matches played simultaneously!
Here it becomes clear how important and popular cricket is to the Indian people.
Sit down for a while and watch.
