Irondequoit Creek runs through Powder Mill Park and is a great place to find migrant species that pass through the area. You can follow the creek inside the park from Park Road south to Woolston Road.
The trail is pretty raw and goes through thick brush areas and is very hilly in spots. Wear leg protection to keep for getting scrubbed by the shrubs and have good footwear both for hiking and as protection against wet areas.
A new trail is being constructed that will follow the creek past the park on Railroad Mills Road and head southeast to connect to trails in the Fisher-Victor area.
See the website below for the latest information and maps about the park trails.
Warblers, Vireos and Downy Woodpeckers are seen in the area. You can also see flocks of sparrows with some chickadees mixed in. Geese tend to congregate in the open fields and along the ponds in the park.
You can easily spend three or four hours of productive birding here.
The park has a couple of restrooms (see the website below for locations) but has no restaurants and snack shops.
The park is open from dawn to dusk all year around.
Valentown Museum (from the ads)
The 38th annual Peddler's Heritage Festival is being held again at Valentown (across from the East View Mall) by the Victor Historical Society.
Come and view pioneer crafts: how to make and dye yarn; making pies from scratch; sewing and making of apparel; wood working and more. Shop in the arts and craft tents or put a bid in on the antique auction. There will be plenty of food and beverage vendors.
Costumes and musical instruments of the 18th and 19th century will be used for entertainment; singing, dancing and stage presentations.
And you will get a free ticket to the Valentown Museum.
The 2007 event will be on Aug 12 and 13. For this year's date and time, call 585-924-4170.
Directions: take route 96 to High Street (just north of Victor, just east of East View Mall) and go to the corner of High Street and Valentown Road.
Ganondagan is a place where the Native Americans teach us immigrants the true ways of life.
On specific weekends (mostly in the warmer months), the Seneca people present oral and physical handicrafts (song, dance, art works, sagas) of various native nations within the area.
We have been to the Indian Powwows a couple times and they are the most interesting weekends. During those times you get to see a whole bunch of different Indian nations at once and much of their different cultures. On regular weekends, the presentation are normally about one subject or tribe.
The land itself has few permanent structures (one long house and one pavillion). The rest of the land is left natural with hiking trails and fields. Then on each of the designated weekends, the people erect whatever temporary structures are needed for that weekends presentation.
See the website below to determine when you would like to visit. (bring an umbrella.... if it rains you'll want it and if it is hot, then it will give you shade.... most of the presentations are open-air affairs).
Address: 1488 route 444
Directions: take route 96 into Victor, NY then go south on route 444 until you see the Ganondogan signs.
