The township of Henrietta was incorporated in 1818. It had been settled and farmed since before the American Revolution (as the area called "West of Town"; where "The Town" was Pittsford). The Erie Canal opened up easy trade routes for the farmers and industries in town. The town continued to prosper and grow throughout the 19th century. After World War II there was a housing boom in Henrietta and the area population grew three-fold. The introduction of I-390 and I-490 brought increased traffic and trade to the town (secondary routes 15 and 15A and 253 and Jefferson Road had been the primary access). Henrietta has had a long time affinity with the education system culminating in the inclusion of Rochester Institute of Technology into the township.
