Twelve Corners

What do you call the intersection of 3 roads? Well, Rochesterians decided it was Twelve Corners (for the three separate intersections each having 4 corners). In Rochester, if you mention Twelve Corners (always spelled and not numerical) everyone knows where you mean.

The three highways are important ones in Brighton: Route 31 (Monroe Avenue), Elwood Avenue, and Winton Road. These roads make a large asterisk mark in the town and were the center of retail markets until the recent rash of super-malls has placed the retail weight farther west of Twelve Corners.

Annual Frederick Douglas Festival

The Frederick DOuglas Freedom Festival is held every June (second weekend). It commemorates the work that Douglas did for championing equal rights for all.

There is a motorcade parade for all interested in participating. Then a ceremony at the Douglas gravesite in Highland Park. More services will happen at Zion Church (549 Clarissa Street). The motorcade will go onto the Highland Bowl at Robinson Drive and South Avenue for sessions of educational speeches, live entertainment and beverages.

Participation is voluntary; all onlookers are welcome and everything is free.
