I did not know that there was a school to learn weaving, tatting, herb lore, knitting and crocheting.... much less a college where adults spend years doing this. I always thought that was learned from grandma to mother to daughter (or the male equivalents).

Berea is based wholly on the preservation and continuation of the best folk arts and crafts that Kentucky has to offer. The college has a good academic curriculum but includes strong emphasis on folk crafts, service to Appalachia and volunteer labor program for the community.
(See http://www.berea.edu/academics/majorsminors.asp for the college programs).
The stores in the town all sell items made by college students and local craftspersons.
See http://www.berea.com/shopping.htm for all the artsy-craftsy shops.
