Original name of this city was Tifts Town and was later shorthanded to Tifton.
It was a bustling town growing into a city in the early 20th century.
But the Interstate Highways moved traffic away from access to shops and markets in Tifton. Although there was much traffic through the county, it was mostly just that, "passing through" and not stopping.
In the 1980's, Tifton's decline became a new rise as funding for new attractions and downtown development enticed new businesses and tourists to come to Tifton. That growth is still in progress today.
