Limnos is the 8 th largest island of Greece with an area of 476 square kilometers located in the northern Aegean Sea, between the Mount Athos, and Samothraki, Gokceada and Agios Efstratios island.

Byzantine and Ottoman period
. From 267 to 269 A.D the island suffers from the raids of Goths
In 395 with the division of the Roman Empire the island passed to the Byzantine Empire.With the fall of Constantinople Ottomans seize Limnos in 1460.During the War of Candia better known as the Fifth Ottoman Venetian War between the Republic of Venice and her allies against the Ottoman Empire from 1684 to 1699 Venetians seize the island only for a while. In 1770, the castle was siege by land and sea, lasts three months by Count Alexios Orlov during the Russo-Turkish War of 1768-1774

Modern period
In 1913 during the First Balkan war Rear Admiral Pavlos Kountouriotis, leader of Greek fleet defeat the ottomans in the Battle of Limnos making the island part of Greece In 1915 during world war I moudros harbor was used by the allies (250 English-French warships) try to capture the Dardanelles Straits
In April 1941, the invasion of Lemnos by Nazi Germany and stays under their occupation till October 1944.
