The best way to visit is to park buy the Burger King (there's a park just to the east whenre parking cost 1 euro per day). Walk through the frontier and if you wich ask for a stamp in your passport. After you clear the border take a bus or walk across the airport to get downtown. I suggest taking the bus in the morning as it will not be very busy. By evening when you are leaving the roads are so congested that you may decide to walk back rather than sit on the bus as it inches through traffic.

Expect to find many unique items in the shops, and the food in the pubs is excellent. The locals are friendly and helpfull with directions. When you take the cable car there are various tour groups that will try to entice you to join. They will drive you to the top of the mountain and entice the monkeys to come closer than they normally would. I found it perfectly adequate to take the cable car to the top and walk among the wildlife as they are. One fo the monkeys did take a liking to some pink earplugs in my pack and had the zipper down in an instant. Generaly though they tolerate Humans but really don't want to be handled.

To visit Southern Spain without stopping for a look across the strait to Africa from the Top of the Rock would be a misstep. Take some time and go for a change of scenery.

• In a nutshell:Really should not be left out of any trip to Southern Spain.
