COLOGNE---the city of culture, shopping and fun!!!

Shopping, Food Junking and Merry Making...

son, in front of the famous Cologne Cathedral
As usual, this city trip was once again an impulse trip. We took advantage of the Thalys train promotion that we couldn't resist. Since both of us have not been to Cologne yet, I needed some questions answered at the Travel Forum and was not disappointed by the answers i received.

The arrival at the Cologne central station was quite overwhelming. The whole station is a mall and there were so many food stalls and mini restaurants scattered around that are just so hard to resist. However, I had a deal with my son prior to our trip that he would take all the responsibilities of the whole trip and I was just there to follow his commands (demands too???). He was in-charge of buying the tickets, choosing the hotel, looking for junkfoods (that are not available in Belgium) and having a great time together!

THE HOTEL

My original plan was to take a quiet and charming hotel located about five-minutes walk from the cathedral. I wanted to see at least the two tallest towers of the church from my window when i wake up in the morning.

But when my son took over the whole plan, he took the hotel of his choice. It was located attached to the train station and just in front of the the infamous Cologne Cathedral. The hotel was very newly renovated...everything in our room seemed new...just like the newness of the Titanic when it sank, ha!ha!ha! My dream of seeing the the cathedral towers when i woke up didn't happen coz even from my bed, i could see the whole cathedral, the whole plaza and people coming in and out of the station. I must say that inspite of its busy location, we never heard a noise from outside or neighboring rooms. We slept peacefully.

I'd give my son a credit for chosing this hotel. Zehn punkten!

GLUTONY IS A SIN...

...and I am guilty as i can be!

At the hotel, breakfast was not included in the price. We were happy. There are so many breakfast corners and restaurants that are open in the very early hours in the morning at the city center. You can even sit in one of their cosy terraces and enjoy your cup of coffee and taste some of those super delicious german pastries, cakes and pretzels. Take bakery just at the beginning of the shopping street. It is called: BÄCKEREI MERZENICH or the KAMPS BÄCKEREI just beside the Tourist Info.

The Tourist Info recommended a couple of good brewery restaurants that serve typical Cologne foods. However, since we were there for just a few days, we decided to indulge ourselves on junkfoods and fastfoods---foods that we are not allowed to eat anytime of the year. We didn't really worry about denying ourselves with the typical German cuisine, afterall, my son's father is a German and so far, i have already learned and served a few German meals in my infinite life here in Belgium. What we wanted to taste were those that we don't have in our country such as Starbucks, KFC, Dunkin' Donuts, etc.

Don't expect to find tips on typical Cologne restaurants here on my page. There aren't any.

GUTEN APPETIT!
