Oslo, Why not?

by titabell - last update: Sep 27, 2008

It's alive even in the midst of winter!

It was yet again one of our impulsive trips. Nothing planned, but when our travel agent offered us a good price for the flight, we couldn't resist.
Why Oslo? Because it is beautiful! We love its cosmopolitan appeal, yet surrounded by beautiful nature. Moreso, most attractions are accessible by public transport or by walking. Inspite of the fact that Norway is a very expensive country to travel (normal by their standard), I still think that it is not too commercialized as compared to the cities that we have already been too.
We love visiting museums, walking in the harbor and just having the feeling of safety wherever we go.
As we were on a low-budget trip, we were able to find places where we could buy our meals at very reasonable prices and be creative in everything we did. A week prior to our trip, I combed VT reviews on low-budget accommodations, restaurants, general tips, etc. From here, we made a fool-proof plan of touring this beautiful place at our standard price.
The Cochs Pensjonat is highly recommendable for well...a mother and son like us who are on a low-budget trip. Window shopping at unaffordable places such as Aker Brygge, Majorstuen and Bogstadveien, gave us an idea of what Oslonians do afford to buy in their daily lives. There are a lot of museums to go to that are really interesting and with FREE entrance.
People around Oslo do not carry smiles on their faces all the time, but once you talk to them, they are really friendly and people of great sense of humor.
We also loved the neighboring places in laid back towns of Kongsberg, Drammen, Hokksund and Askim. We love meeting people and we met a few whom we would say, we'll be meeting again someday.
Are we going back again to Oslo in the near future? The answer is "SOONER THAN YOU THINK"

360° Place to See

This particular area is one of our favorites. Here you could see Radhus, Aker Brygge, Akerhus, Nobel Prize Center, etc. not far from each other. There are a few souvenir shops to choose from. We were able to buy some items that were competitive in prices. We visited this place twice to be sure that we didn't miss a spot. Unfortunately, the boats that were supposed to take us to Bygdoy were on holiday. So, winter is really not the best time to take that boat ride after all. Anyway, we have already seen Oslo in autumn and winter. It will be a good idea to visit it again in spring and summer. ... "WE'LL BE BACK".

A Cherry on a Cake

It was around the celebration of the king's birthday when we last visited this place. There were some ice sculptures around the palace and the Karel Johan was put to life with all the red flags in every post. I would say that whatever the weather is, this palace remains beautiful to see. It is like a cherry on top of a cake. The cake, are the other interesting attractions such as the Slottsparken, the Karl Johan street, the National Theatret, etc. Unlike other palaces that we've seen, this one has more feeling of a home inspite of its grand size.
Long live the King!

Great Oslo tips from your midwinter visit! I like your photo of yourself at the Munch museum. There are 7-Eleven stores in Copenhagen, too. By coincidence I just ate a meal at IKEA this afternoon. (OK, but not very cheap here in Germany.)
