The Walled City

A nice surprise

My stay in Lucca was an unexpected one and very enjoyable too. My sister and her husband had the chance of renting an apartment from a friend and I was invited along too. I'd never been to Italy and the idea of a city within walls intrigued me. You're able to walk along the tops of the walls and this is a beautiful experience both at night and during daylight. We hired bikes on our second day here which allowed us to explore the walls and see around the city a little better (bikes take no priority over pedestrians though so drive with care!)
It's twinned with the UK town of Abingdon near Oxford (England) however there aren't too many tourists in comparison the larger cities which personally I found very appealing.

Narrow Streets

In Lucca, the streets have that old fashioned look about them, to me they're very italian... I guess this is because it's my first experience of an Italian city. This photo is one I took at sunset

The food

Gosh the food was beautiful. I have never tasted ice cream like it... especially the strawberry stuff- mouth watering!
I also had the most exquisite pork while I was there at a restaurant we stumbled across... much to my aggrivation I can't remember the name of the place, it looked quite exclusive from the outside, we sat outdoors and it was beside a little place for parking bikes... your guess is as good as mine, but it was really lovely and quite off the beaten track

Pros:"Beautiful, untouched, friendly locals"
Cons:"hot, no air con, some sleazy men"
In A Nutshell:"Cultural experience within walls."

Great that you had use of an apartment in Lucca and also hired bikes to get around. That's how I would do it, too. I've never been to Lucca but hope to go because Puccini was born there and they have a festival nearby.

Gotta love those Italian Gelatos - crisp and vibrant taste. I've tried some here at home but it did not taste like the ones I've had near Rome's Spanish Steps. You know, things just taste better at the source - just like with Guinness!!
