Luxor, unfortunately a place you have to go

by enoluvr - last update: Feb 11, 2007

A horrible city surrounded by fantastic sights

The Karnak Temple complex
Now this may not sound to good, but the town of Luxor is horrendous! It has about as much charm as a war zone. The streets and sidewalks are dirty and in horrible condition. Everyone is either trying to sell you something or just plain take your money (with or without you consent). Not a very relaxing environment.

Walking around town

As you walk from one sight to the other you are constantly on guard. There are people everywhere trying to either a) sell you something, b) sell you a service, c) give you advice, d) take you somewhere, e) beg from you or f) steal your money one way or another. For example, one day we were walking to a restaurant that had been recommended in the Rough Guide. On the way a local started talking to us on the way. We tried to ignore him but he kept on walking. Once we were all at the restaurant, he wanted a tip for taking us there! Then he tried to get money from the restaurant for bringing us in. Another time, we stopped for minute to fiigure out what we wanted to do next. While looking at the map, we were slowly being surrounded by a bunch of young teenage males who were eyeing our backpacks and anything else of value. To say the least we high tailed it out of there.

The sights

As bas as the town of Luxor is, the sights require you to put up with everything else. They are fantastic. We were in Luxor for four days and we were busy everyday, all day. Our favorite sights were Karnak, Luxor Temple, Valley of the Kings, Ramesseum, Medinat Habu and Hatshepsut Temple.
