City is located in the Southeast Anatolia region which is economically underdeveloped compared to the other regions. But when you take the history into account it's one of the leading regions. Regions has a very rich history and cultural heritage, as can be seen in its historical sites. It's history begins aroun 700 BC in the New Stone Age.
In the land which encircles the Firat (Euphrates) and Dicle (Tigris) Rivers, lived Abraham, the patriarch claimed by the three world religions. Some think that Abraham was born in what is now called Sanliurfa, and later moved south from the cith to Harran. In Harran, which was an important Mesopotamian historic and cultural center, the ruins of the one of he largest and oldest Islamic university can be seen among the archeological remains.

Gobeklitepe
Adam’s garden of eden in Göbeklitepe
German Magazine, ‘Der Spiegel’, wrote that ruins belonging to the Garden of Eden, from which Adam and Eve were expelled for eating the forbidden apple, is in Göbeklitepe in the province of Sanliurfa in Turkey. The archaeological digs that have been taking place in Göbeklitepe have revealed findings that call into question all previous information known to man regarding prehistoric times and the path to civilisation. Traces of an 11,000-year long legend have been found in Eastern Anatolia. The first human being is said to have hunted in Turkey, Syria, Iraq and Iran, and settled in Göbeklitepe, working the land there.
The rivers Tigris and Euphrates in the Bible:
The temples that have been found are proof of the civilisation that was once in this area. Two of the four rivers mentioned in the Bible, the Tigris and Euphrates run through this area. Furthermore, Adam ground his first grains of wheat here. The newly-found ruins show man’s step-by-step journey towards a settled order.
