Downtown Montevideo has a gritty, unwashed feel to it. Like an old black and white film noir, the city pulsates with adventure, intrigue and the possibility of danger. Just a mile from the city center, heading north, you pop up out of the grime, like a ground hog on the first day of spring, to see the sparkling Rambla and the wide sandy beaches of Los Pocitos. Across from the beach, glitzy condos and casinos line the clean wide road. Hundreds of Uruguayans walk, jog and bike along the Rambla any time night or day. Even as you leave the luxurious mansions of Carrasco and head into the country, the feeling that Uruguay is one gigantic beach town is undeniable. |
