Welcome to Jordan

by sanluipal - last update: Sep 5, 2007

Jordan is a peaceful country in the middle of a problematic area: Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Israel and Palestinian Territories are the neighbours. This small country is surrounded by political extremism and violence, receiving refuges from Palestine or Iraq. How can they live in peace? By other side, over 80% of Jordan is desert and they have a great lack of water. In this context their previous king, King Hussein had done everything to get the peace in Middle East and died without get it. We knew Iraqi and Palestinian people, listed their histories and lives. It was amazing to know the other side of the history!
The most known place is Petra, the magical ancient Nabataean city, but there’s so much more to see. I would recommend:
- Ruins of roman cities – Jerash is the best, but Umm Qais at north has a great view of Galilee sea and Golan Heights;
- Castles – the Karak Castle is the most interesting of Jordan’s Crusader history. We have great castles in Europe, but this one has a rich history and others like the desert castle have different characteristics, surviving in the middle of nothing.
- Biblical sites – there are powerful biblical sites like Nebo Mount, where Moses had seen the Promised Land and died.
- Desert - the amazing desert of Wadi Rum. We can walk in the red sand or rock-climbing, but we have to fell the desert.
- Dead Sea – it’s a picture of post card, but we have to float in Dead Sea, the lowest place of earth.
- Amman – walk in downtown Amman, without nothing to do is a great experience. We walked, bought things, drank orange juice with Jordans in the street… we felt Amman like Jordan.

Jordanians are truly nice to the visitors and Jordan is probably the safest country in the region. Welcome to Jordan!
