The Museum of Ethnology is really worth a visit if you are interested in understanding the Vietnamese people. They are a collection of many many ethnic groups and their history of defending their independence as a nation, while preserving so much in these separate streams of ethnically diverse and rich culture - is pretty interesting. There's a lot of info on these tribal differences and on cultural aspects such as , traditional dress, weaving, conical hat making and funeral rituals.
This Museum also provides a moving insight into the extreme hardship of the people in recent history and explains a lot about their resilience, ingenuity and enterprising capacity. This is a people who have suffered some terrible extremes and it's worth appreciating at least some of it, especially as it has been relatively recent (up to mid-70's).
There are English translations so it's easy to follow.
