Newaygo Travel Guide: 3 reviews and 6 photos
Newaygo County has over 230 natural lakes and 350 miles of rivers and streams, 2 huge dams remain, Croton and Hardy. Hardy is the largest earthen dam East of the Mississippi. The Muskegon River continues to be the main attraction for summer cottage residents and fisherman, who find it nearly the best source for steel head in the spring and salmon in the fall, anywhere in Michigan. Tubing and canoing on the river are summertime favorites. Hunting, snowmobiling and cross country skiing are wintertime favorites, with over half the county (100,000 acres) contained in the Manistee National Forest.
The northwest part of the L.P. is really blessed with many fine trout streams, and a good number of them are open in the winter. The Muskegon River continues to offer the best steelhead and salmon fishing anywhere.
The broad Muskegon River offers ice-free conditions between Croton Dam and Newaygo and has good numbers of browns and rainbows. You must release the browns in this reach, but you can keep rainbows over 10 inches. Trout fishing continues for a few miles below Newaygo, and here you can keep browns if they?re at least 15 inches long. Good access and launch ramps are found at the dam, Pine Street, Thornapple Avenue and, in Newaygo, at a city park.
Condider a guided river float trip with one of the many expierenced river guides. Consider golfing at the fabulous Brigadoon Golf Club. Brigadoon Golf Club offers 27 challenging holes of golf for the beginner to the most advanced golfer. Designed by Dr. Grant McKinley, it is one of Michigan's most unique golf course designs. Dr. McKinley preserved the natural beauty and wildlife habitat while carving Brigadoon through a mature oak forest; trophy deer, wild turkey, and red fox are common sights.
The property also sports a beautiful sparkling clear, trout stream that runs through the entire property, it's not at all unusual to see a steelhead making their run in the spring.
Other nearby golf courses include, Briar Hill Golf, Village Green Golf Club, Ramshorn on the Lakes and Northland.
