Christmas markets in Cologne

by chipper99 - last update: May 26, 2007

Cologne at Christmas

I had a 3 day/2night stay in Cologne just before Christmas 2006 and it was fantastic. Why??
The city is so clean. No litter, pubs and restaurants are spotless.
The people are very friendly. Everyone we encountered was friendly, helpful and keen to offer advice on the best places to see and visit.
The cathedral is amazing and was worth the flight money alone. A massive, historic, beautiful building that you have to see to believe.
There are so many places to visit in Cologne as well as the massive shopping areas, great pubs, the walk along the Rhine River. I would highly recommend a visit.

Cologne Christmas Markets

When visiting Cologne for the Christmas markets, make sure you see them all. We counted at least 5 different, large markets around the city centre and outskirts. To me the best one was located just behind the cathedral and difficult to miss. A great, friendly atmosphere, great music from local buskers and plenty of Gluwhein. When buying the hot Gluwhein (many different flavours available), you pay a deposit on the mug. You can then either keep it or take it back for a refund. I think it was 2euro. I kept mine as a souveneir.
Also try the slightly smaller market at Rudolfplatz, which is also surrounded by nice, late night bars where the local always make you welcome.

Drei Konige Hotel

We stayed in this hotel for a 2 night break at the Christmas market. It is not the classiest hotel ever but it is clean, friendly staff and very well priced. The price was extra special as the hotel is right in the city centre. A 5 minute walk to the cathedral and main shopping area. I would recommend this for a quick stay in the city or weekend break, but not for those seeking luxurious surroundings.
