We were in Pingyao for two and a half days, and I really enjoyed this little town. It’s exactly how I imagined the old China was. While we were there we also visited the Qiao and Wang manors, and these places were also really splendid.
BUT: The surroundings of this place made me really sad. As soon as you get some kilometers outside the Pingyao city walls, the poverty of the area almost knocks you out. I knew Shanxi province was poor, but I didn’t expect it to be this bad.

Fortunately until now (11-2009) people do not have to wear Qing costumes. And did not look like anybody moved out of the inner city. Pingyoa is a very nice old city. Very touristy but nevertheless very authentic.
