We were a group of 15 VT'ers visiting Helsingborg March 31st 2007. After walking around inside and outside of Hamlets Castle we took the ferry to Helsingborg. Here we had lunch near the harbour, and then we had a slow walk through the town to the old fortress Kärnen.
The tower is the only part remaining of a larger Danish fortress (Helsingborg was part of Denmark until 1658) which, along with the the fortress Kronborg on the opposite of Øresund, controlled the entranceway to the Baltic Sea.

Steps to Kärnen

According to Arild Huitfeldt in "Danmarckis Rigis Krønicke" the Danish legend King Frode Fredegod build "Kernen" (Danish spelling) in the year 1, and it is considered the oldest building in Skåne.
We walked all the steps up to Kärnen and saw a beautiful sunset overlooking the town and the sound "Øresund". We were not there in the opening hours, so we could not get into the tower but it was great looking at it from the outside.

Pros and Cons

Pros:Friendly people, good restaurants, nice buildings
Cons:Beer and vine is more expensive than in Helsingør

Ove, this is a beautiful page with great info. The Steps to Kärnen is my favorite picture. The dragon is a little scary, though. :-)
