København aka Copenhagen, Denmark

by OH_DK - last update: Apr 21, 2007

Capital of Denmark with many names

Most travelers recognize the Danish capital as Copenhagen but the real Danish name is København. The word means "merchant's harbor".
In the 12th century it was just a little fishing village with the name "Havn" (Harbour), but it soon grew in importance and population when it came into possession of Bishop Absalon. At that time Roskilde (town 30km west from København) was the capital of Denmark and not until about 1400 København took over this role.
In 13th century it was repeatedly attacked by the Hanseatic League. During 1658-59 it withstood a severe siege by the Swedes under Carl X Gustav and in the years 1801 and 1807 it was bombarded by the British navy.

Other names for København:
Latin: Hafnia
English: Copenhagen
German: Kopenhagen
French/Spanish: Copenhague
Italian: Copenaghen
Swedish: Köpenhamn
Hungarian: Koppenhága
Finish: Kööpenhamina
Czech: Kodaň
Islandic: Kaupmannahöfn
Turkish: Kopenhag

I will tell you more about this great city later and put more photos on the page.

New updates on my Copenhagen page

24 March, 2007
I have just made a new travelouge with photos of Copenhagen sights from the spring last year. We had a lot of nice and warm weather in a long period last year - just hoping for good weather next weekend at our 2 Copenhagen VT meetings. Click right here to see it..
There's also a new restaurant tip, some new transportation tips and some more "Things to do" tips! I will keep adding more tips here because Copenhagen is the first place most tourists see when they fly in to Kastrup (Copenhagen Airport).
I do hope that all you guys who arrive to Copenhagen will have a good impression of the city!

VT visitors in Copenhagen

The big VT meet in Nørrebro, Cph, March 30th 2007
I couldn't find the location Nørrebro on VT so I've made a "Sortedams Sø" page and a travelouge about the meet there. Have a look at VT meet in Cph March 30 2007 on Nørrebro Bryghus.
Visit from Bolu, Turkey, February 4th and 11th 2007
Kaine, Asli and Sefa (VT name: Stefan144) were visiting me, and we made a walking tour in downtown Copenhagen.
Look at my travelouge "My first VT guests in Copenhagen, Feb. 4, 2007" about the visit.

Funny videos from the Tivoli! And I like your travelogues and tips on Copenhagen. When I was there in June, rented a bike at "Københavns Cykler" at København H and had a great time riding all around. That Viva restaurant on the boat sounds really nice.
