Rome Wasn't Built in a Day It will help you tremendously to have some understanding of Roman history before you visit this amazing city. 2,000+ years of continuous occupation can be pretty overwhelming to look at! But I think it helps to break down the architecture into four major phases: "Classical," "Middle Ages," "Renaissance plus." and "1850 plus." These are grose oversimplifications, but I think they can help orient you to what you're looking at.
Keep in mind that the people who lived in Rome kept moving streets around, building new structures from the rubble of old structures, and building new structures literally on top of old structures (e.g. the Marcello Theater). Therefore we often see a "crazy" mixture of many different time periods.
I love the Michelin guide book to Rome. It is small and very, very informative. It is from England.
I am not interested in the fashion and shopping of Rome. Please look elsewhere for shopping tips.
I will be working on this page in the future. | | | Two Thousand Years Later... |
