Visit the Santo Domingo Plaza,... - Mexico City
Visit the Santo Domingo Plaza,... Around Town Review

Favorite thing: Visit the Santo Domingo Plaza, the second most important colonial square after the “Zócalo”.
The old plaza was twice officially renamed in the 20th century: first as the Corregidora’s Garden (in honour of Josefa Ortiz de Dominguez, an independence patriot), then as the May 23 Plaza (in commemoration of the National University’s autonomy, won in 1929). However, for the public the name has always been simply “Santo Domingo Plaza”. It is one Mexico City’s loveliest public squares, partly because it is surrounded by a number of buildings having great architectural and historical significance. The Santo Domingo Convent, the Palace of the Inquisition, the old Customs House and the Evangelist Arcade were all nerve centres in Mexico’s spiritual, economic and social life in colonial times. In addition, the Plaza is all the more significant because all buildings around it date from the same period, making it one of the capital’s most homogeneous squares.

Visit the National Palace... - Mexico City
Visit the National Palace... Zocalo Review

Favorite thing: Visit the National Palace (also on the Constitution Square), today the seat of the highest powers of the Mexican government. It was originally build as a residence for viceroys. This historical building, erected in 1523 became the official residence of the conqueror Hernan Cortez. Its fortress type construction in Toscan style architecture was in trusted to architects the architects Rodrigo de Pontesillos and Juan Rodriguez. The vice-regal apartments, the second for the royal high court, the third for me state exchequer and the four for the royal chapel. After destroyed partially in the 1692 riots, it was rebuild in 1693 date of the existing buildings first and second levels. The third level was set back in 1927 as anti-aesthetic. It was the home of Mexican kings, private property of the conqueror Cortez, seat of the colonial government, dwelling of viceroys and emperors, and finally came to the presidents of Mexico. The stonework in this palace is a mute witness of the Mexican history.

More info and pictures you find in the “National Palace travelogue ”.
