There is whole range of accommodation in Sydney from basic to four stars for those with money to burn. One would be advised to book in advance for the upmarket places through your travel agent. If you haven't arranged in advance like me, it's not so difficult to find a hotel or backpackers place in Sydney. When you arrive at the airport or train station you will find without problem a lot of advertising of hotels and backpackers places. Just check what's on the board and you can call for free to the hotel / backpackers place to see if they have available rooms and ask after the price. It can change a lot to what it says on the advertising. The most just give the cheapest rates (most of the time for a single room) but the prices can go up fast for a double room. I have now been to Sydney 3 times, so had to take a hotel / backpackers place 6 times (3 times when arriving in Aussie and 3 times when leaving) and will give you here some addresses. Most of the time I stay near bustling Kings Cross, the Mecca of backpackers where the action is. My favourite hotel is
Roslyn Gardens, but also the most expensive I had. Price for a double room is AU $ 99 (without breakfast and also about 15 minutes walking from Kings Cross. Not far, but it will be after a night out!), but you have your private bathroom and terrace. Other good places are the Funk House (see picture), the Original Backpackers, Bernly Private Hotel, Sydney Central Backpackers and Barracuda. I also noticed that most of those places pick you up for free at the airport and some offering you jobs while you stay. But if you look for more places check out this web page. Just a word of warning... availability of accommodation can be low and pricey at peak periods especially New Years Eve!!!
