Admittedly we skipped some of the bigger cities like Venice and Florence, but out of the cities we saw in northern Italy (Verona, Bologna and Genoa), Genoa easily takes the cake as the most stunning. Absolutely beautiful. Lots of winding alleyways, beautiful views from the hills above the city, a pleasant harbor to walk along. And the people were so friendly! There was no meticulous lookdown to see if we were wearing the newest fashions, like we experienced in Verona. Genoa is highly recommended and I look forward to visiting again!
