Getting out to the islands is a must. Although it can be crowded on the weekends that's just if you go to the main locations. i.e. Isla de Plata, Playa Colorada - Arapo, Arapito, Playa Blanca... If you get a boat to take you places, ask to go to more remote beaches if you feel it will be too crowded for you. Just PLEASE DON'T TOUCH THE CORAL! They're very delicate and under constant threat from one thing or another.
So where do you get boat rides? Most of the bigger beaches will take you to designated spots on the islands which is nice but then it's even better if you go to someplace like Santa Fe where there might be many boats and you can go someplace off the beaten path. Especially on holidays or weekends.
Unashamed plug, I run fantastic boat trips out of Santa Cruz and you can also often find a boat or two in Puerto Nuevo near Yaguaracual. I mention these locations because they're less frequently used and in almost hidden areas of the park. Try to make your arrangements in the evening so your trip can leave early the next morning and you'll have plenty of time to go play in the water and find shade by mid day.
If you are planning to spend a week or so in Mochima, then take a day or two up in the mountains. The climate is nice and the views are great. It's well known in the region as a center for arts and crafts. Bronze welding, ceramic, paintings, wooden crafts, handmade paper are some of the items to look for.
This is a state park that is in Guanta, near Puerto La Cruz. It's a great spot. You walk in on a long path down the valley to a few waterfalls that are surrounded by foilage. Very scenic place for photos. Bring your own food and water because none is sold there. I don't know why the state doesn't start one consession to sell simple staples. It would more than fund the park.
- Pros:The SCENERY, diving, snorkeling, nice posadas, beaches, high adventure...
- Cons:One road in and out. So it can be crowded on the holidays if you just follow the pack.
- In a nutshell:I like it enough to call it home now!
