Time permitting my pages on Yemen, Sana'a and other pages will grow continuously. In the meantime if you have a question, don't hesitate to ask me. (If I don't know the answer myself I'm enthusiastic enough to ask someone else.) |

| | See Yemen before the tourists come This has been the Bangladesh Tourist Corporation slogan for a long time. In Bangladesh this will probably remain applicable for a long time to come, but in Yemen tourism is on the rise again (although I don't expect it to become a mainstream destination in my lifetime). The kidnappings of August 2005 to September 2006 did not result in lower number of visitors, rather on the contrary: record numbers were received during those years. The July 2007 terrorist attack on Spanish tourists in Marib will probably also only have a temporary effect on arrivals. The type of traveller that considers Yemen as a destination is probably both quite adventurous and calculating (in the sense that they will realize a single terrorist attack could occur anywhere in today's world). In the meantime the Government and people of Yemen will do their utmost to ensure safety and hospitality. |
| | Close to the bottom of the Human Development Index One cause of Yemen's low human development ranking is the under-utilization of the potential of its women. Probably the highest maternal mortality in the world, almost total lack of political representation, weak legal position, low participation in the paid workforce etc. Due to Wahabi influence from the North the veil has gained great 'popularity' in recent decades, but - the appalling position of women notwithstanding - the veil does also hide positive developments which cannot be turned back and will manifest themselves in the future. |

| Pros: | "unique, safe, friendly people, one of the world's great cultures, breath-taking scenery" | | Cons: | "position of women and "Ethiopians" (akhdam), non-existent rubbish collection (apart from Sana'a and some other cities that are clean)" | | In A Nutshell: | "a truly unique travel experience" |

Will I be OK with a shirt that comes down to below the elbow or do I have to cover my arms all the way to the wrist? | travelinxs Wed Aug 29, 2007 09:29 UTC Great advice mate - off to work but will be back to carry on reading. Thanks. | Luchonda Sat Jul 7, 2007 17:34 UTC Interesting tips - thx for sharing |
