To me there are two ways of looking at Oman: as a country that offers a nice mix of old and new or as a country that in neither department can live up to expectations. Let me explain. Oman has some beautiful scenery and (way out in the countryside) an authentic Arab feeling, while at the same time there are malls, cinemas, Starbucks, fancy hotels in Muscat etc. So if you want to visit one Arab country only and want that combination, Oman would be a good place to visit. However, if you want a truly authentic and overwhelming Arab experience, visit Yemen; if on the other hand you like the modern amenities in a Arab setting (and don't mind how superficial it all is) your destination should be Dubai. |
| | Oman specialty: Portuguese forts There is an abundance of forts in the country (not all built by the Portuguese by the way). See a few more pics in my Oman travelogue. |
