A landmark | View from the Turkish bridge near Shiharah |
The (rebuilt) Turkish bridge spanning a gorge just outside Shiharah is one of the famous landmarks of Yemen. |
| | ...a town... But the town itself is also of interest, even though it's decaying. (I figure it's population is going down as nowadays it's not such an interesting proposition anymore to live at the very mountain top, while the markets and the fields are far away in the valley.) Yemen is full of cultural heritage that would be the envy of most countries in the world. But it's also offically one of the least-developed countries (the so-called LDCs) and it's tragic, but there are just way too many monuments in Yemen to be maintained. |
| Yemen's ubiquitous terraces near Shiharah |
| | ...and the mountains surrounding them Typical Shiharah tip: take a pick-up Landcruiser (called "habba" in Yemen) from the valley up to the townm spend the night at Shiharah Hotel and walk down halfway to the village where your own tranport has overnighted. Join your luggage at that halfway point. |

| Pros: | "beautiful" | | Cons: | "trip up is a little expensive" | | In A Nutshell: | "If in Northern Yemen, don't miss it (but don't worry if you miss it because you're going other places)" |
