Until 1967, the Golan Heights was part of Syria and was populated by Syrians. In the 1967 war, the local population escaped into Syria, except for the 4 Druze villages which are still there today. When you drive around the Golan you can still see deserted villages and houses, some with bullet holes, like this mosque here.

Shouting Hill

The border fence separated the Golan Druze from their brothers in Syria after the 1967 war. There is a place where Druze from both sides come to see each other.
