Being Israeli, I am not allowed into Syria and yet I have several VT pages of Syria. Have I sneaked into Syria at night? Am I a spy? Well, not really. The Golan Heights area (as it is called in Hebrew) was taken by Israel at the 6 days war at 1967. Since then, it is under Israeli rule. VT prefers to follow the international law here and not the de-facto status. So, if you are Iranian, for example, and look here in VT, you might say to your self "this looks like a nice place, I must visit here the next time I'm in Syria". Well, if you do, prepare for a little surprise. The only way to get here is from Israel, the currency here is the Israeli new shekel, most of the people speak Hebrew and even the local Druze people wouldn't accept any Syrian money. This might change in the future, if and when Israel and Syria reach an agreement about the final status of the area, but for now this is part of Israel, not Syria for any practical aspect. |
