The monument of the roaring lion is one of the most famous in Israel. Any school kid in Israel learns about the battle in Tel Hay in which Trumpeldor and seven more got killed and buried here. Technically, the monument and the graves are not in Tel Hai but in the nearby Kibbutz, Kfar Gil'adi. This is where the survivors of the famous batlle retreated to when Tel Hay fell. The nearby city of Qiryat Shmona (shmona is Hebrew for eight) was named after these eight victims. The monument is the work of Abraham Melnikov.
Near this little cemetery you will find a museum where the renovated Tel Hay court can be seen. This court was the place where the battle took place. |
