The Eagle's Nest is strongly associated with Adolf Hitler. It was one his favourite places and it was given to him as a birthday gift from the Nazi party. After the war, almost the entire place was destroyed by the allies to prevent turning it into a pilgrimage place for old Nazis. You can still see the original lift which will take you to the top. But, first you need to get there. Unless you are ready for a long hike, you should take one of the busses leading to the top. The road is narrow and curvy and is closed to private cars. This picture was taken from the bus on the way up.
Once you are down again, you can explore the area. You can go and sail on Königsee and visit the Salt Mines. |
