If you want to see a place that still has close ties to its ancestry roots with all the conveniences we as Americans love, Okinawa is perfect. It's a combination of both old and new worlds. The scenery is AMAZING. It's one of the most beautiful places on the planet and I really don't think you'll find a nicer culture of people than those on Okinawa.
It is a fun place to visit during Golden week (first week in May). They have dragon boat races and local dancing/drumming events across the island.
Out of the 9 or 10 aquariums I've visited, Okinawa's Churaumi Aquarium is hands down the BEST.
Near the aquarium is a place called the Butterfly House, which is a lot of fun for both adults and kids.
Some of the "must see" scenic points are Cape Hedo at the northern tip of the island and Cape Zanpa (the lighthouse) on the western edge of the island. Also make the time to see Shurijo castle in central Okinawa.
To get a small taste of the local culture, be sure to visit Gyokusendo village (also known as Okinawa World). You can tour the underground limestone caves, eat fried bananas at the cafe and watch as the Eisa drummers perform.
Children are an important part of Okinawan culture. Therefore, you will find many amazing playgrounds spread across the island.
I really can't say enough about Okinawa. It's a fantastic place!
