Domazlice is a medium-sized, regional town in western Bohemia near the border with Bavaria. Some English is spoken, but knowing some Czech or German would be a big advantage. A good general description is found at Wikipedia.
The Chod Festival is held every August. The festival highlights traditional Bohemian and Moravian arts, crafts, entertainment and street food. Of course, world famous Bohemian beer is a central player in the festivities.
Because the region is becoming popular with touring Germans and other Europeans, there are a surprising number of activities available--cross country skiing and snow shoeing in winter, hiking and bikingon trails and country roads in the warmer months, and car trekking to relatively nearby castles.
Other sites within a short day's drive of Domazlice include the spas of western Bohemia, the city of Pilsen and the Sumava national park.
It's easy to combine a trip to western Bohemia with a visit to Bavaria. We visited the Bavarian royal city of Regensburg (half day's drive) after our stay in Domazlice.
Domazlice and the region (there are some low key European style resorts between Domazlice and the border with Bavaria) is mostly visited by Czechs from other parts of the Czech Republic (and mainly during the Chod Festival) and Germans (all year round) who find the short drive and low costs of vacationing tempting.
A small but growing number of visitors are American descendants of Czechs and German families who came from this region. Many come on tours organized around "finding your roots." Other Americans, like us, come on their own just interested in seeing where their forefathers came from and understanding the culture that helped shaped their heritage.
