Take the Rt#395 southward.
South of Lee Vining June Lake and MammothLakes lie in a beautiful landscape with lakes and wooded mountains.
I was there in October and the trees were yellow.

Conway Summit.

Breathtaking views, to the West in the direction of Yosemite National Park.

The ghost town Bodie.

Drive from Lee Vining to Bodie, an old ghost town.
We didn't make it, because after a long drive through the rough landcape north of Mono Lake, the paved road stopped and an unpaved one full of warnings begun. Beware! Stop! Half an hour of a very difficult road! We,cowards, decided to go back, because Moturis didn't like us to drive on such roads.

Mono Lake

Mono lake is probably one of the oldest lakes in the world, 700.000 years old. It was filled with water of melting glaciers and it is a basin without outlets. Evaporation made it smaller and very salt and alkaline-rich. Because the Los Angeles Aqueduct took water from the tributary streams the level of the lake dropped between 1941 and 1981. Thanks to the work of conservationists the lake seems to be saved and the water is rising again, depending on the precipitation.
