Many Europeans think, that California is: San Francisco, Los Angeles, Hollywood and sunny beaches. But in this large state is much more to see and enjoy.

North of San Francisco the north coast with many beaches between the rocks.
There are the Redwoods, large forests of very tall sequoias.
National and State Parks, mountains, lakes, deserts and plains. Volcano's and vineyards.
Lassen Volcano N.P. and Lake Almanor.
Small cities in the Gold Country, dreaming of the past.

Drive the rt 395, east of the Sierra Nevada, and you see Owens Valley, dry and infertile, but with beautiful pastel colours. You learn something about the importance of water for a land and what happens when man interferes with nature and takes the water away. The same happened to Mono Lake near Lee Vining.

In 1999 I made a tour through California with a motorhome. It was an other California than I ever had thought of. More beautiful, more varied.

And in October 2000 I made another trip, with a rented car and staying in motels/hotels.
And again this beautiful state surprised me with its variety.
