The Smoke That Thunders.

victoria falls
The Zambezi river is part of the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe. A bridge with a road and a railroad connects the two countries. It was for the first time in my life, that I saw people bunjee-jumping. From this bridge. Not the first thing I thought about when I came to Africa.
When you visit the Victoria falls in April/May they have more water than in September/October. Advantage: you see them when they are very wide. Disadvantage: the whole road along the water is filled with a rain of fine water drops, and details of the scenery are not seen as well as when there is less water.
When I was there in August 1995 the Zambian site was very dry, but we crossed the border, had a 10 minutes walk to the entrance of the National Park and from there a short walk to the view on the falls.
The view and the sound is really unforgettable.
The Victoria Falls are World Heritage Site since 1989.
Vic Falls

The name of the falls.

David Livingstone, who discovered them named them after his queen, queen Victoria of Britain.
The local Kololo tribe gave the falls the name: "Mosi-Oa-Tunya", "the smoke, that thunders". A well chosen name.
But the tourists who have seen the falls give them the nickname Vic Falls;)

some facts.

The entrance to the park was in 1995 20 Zim Dollars, now it is 20 US Dollars!
In 1995 1US $ was about 12 Zim Dollars, now it is 55 Zim Dollars.
You cannot leave the park and come back the same day with your ticket, e.g. when you like to see the falls in morning light and in the afternoon. There are no drinks available and the high temperature and the sound of so much falling water makes you thirsty. So take drinks with you!

Zimbabwe is completely ruined now..... A desperate people with nothing but a raving loonatic to hinder there growth, I guess if Zimbawe had material value the west would do something about it..
