I stayed with my girlfriend (fiancee) in May of 1960, when I took a month off from the US Navy there. Her apartment was overlooking the puddefjord and the shipbuilding yards, I would hear the hammering and noise in the morning. She would go to work, and I would walk down the hill going past a school yard, and then either to walk to the city center or ride the streetcar. I usually walked. There were several stairs near the school and I could watch the kids play football (soccer) in the yard most days. I went for a breakfast and then a shave from the barber near the Hotel Norge. (The old one) they tore it down and built the current one later. Evenings we went to eat at the Hotel Rosenkrantz, and then to dance. It was like paradise. But she dumped me for another sailor who made a lot more money. I found a better woman then. Lots of pretty women in Norway, the vikings were not dumb, they brought home pretty women not the other kind.

I returned to Bergen after an absence of 37 years, I was filled with joy to finally get home (adopted) but I did not know that I might get to be an emigrant to Norway. I also found a lot of other helpful things from a man that I met there. Bergen is just as wonderful as I remembered. I see changes, but not any that appear to be bad. Wesselstuen is a great place to dine and the service is good. Where Ricks Cafe? is now was a rotorian club and they held dances there often. It was a great romantic place to go. The old Hotel Norge had a wonderful dance floor also. The Hotels Rosenkrantz and Neptune were good too.

But the city is a wonderful safe place to wander the streets and enjoy.
