There have been so many changes in Beaufort. Some were for the good of some and some were for the bad of others. There was water coming in from the West Beaufort bridge over 50 years ago. One day sand was dredged from one side of the bridge to the other and filled in the water with land. The worse thing was that marshes started growing up some six plus feet from the surface and made the place look a mess and brought in field rhodents to the area destroying most of the property around the edge of what use to be water.
Mrs. Doris Stanley worked very hard raising funds as Mayor Protem to build a Boys and Girls Club that is still standing. It was placed in the Old Queen Street Gymnasium that the students worked so hard to build back in the 60's. At least that is a structure left of their old school site.
There are other activities for the youth on Front Street where they can learn about the water and boats. It's a shame to live in a place where there is water and boats and not learn about them.
There was once a saw mill between Craven and Turner street near the west Beaufort Bridge. It was demolished and the sand from that was dredged in covered the saw dust. Projects were built there and the value of property went down for all those who lived near. It could have been made into a State Park or a Playground for the children, since there was not much offered there and it would have been a place for visitors to come and enjoy who had kids and not to go to just Front street for entertainment. As I have been reading in many websites about protecting wetlands, They covered it up causing vegetation to migrate throughout the entire area that did not have cement based structures for housing. The sawdust and sewer should have been dredged out and allowed the water to fill in the area. When it rains there are a lot of mosquitoes.
There is a Airport at the end of West Beaufort Road that has been used for Air shows and safety training for the firefighters. We attended that 2 years ago. It was very nice. I have a picture that I will be posting.
I could hardly believe they would block the traffic in the middle of Craven Street and build a jail in and accross the street. This causes people to have to go around the area to another street to go down town or come back and go around. For such a small town, of less than ten blocks, that is the only block that is blocked off. How could a jail be so important, it disfigured the area.
- Pros:More than just Front Sreet, there are some nice people there.
- Cons:Little parking space for visitors and few eating places. Cost of living too high for inhabitants.
- In a nutshell:A penisula on the Atlantic Ocean for visitors
