What an absolutely beautiful place to explore. At first entering the park, there is a visitors center. Make sure to stop here to watch a film on the park and to experience the feel of the petrified wood that is in the park. There are many great books and mementos to pick up related to the Painted Desert and Petrified Forest.

At the entry gate, they will give you a map to the park. Be prepared to spend at least 2 hours to go through the entire park.

There is a speed limit and roads are sometimes windy and on the edge of cliffs that with one little mistake or not paying attention, you become a part of the landscape. At least, that's how someone like me who is afraid of heights felt at times.

Other visitors are there to greet you at observation points (which I suggest stopping at each one to get a different view as each has something unique to look at).

For instance, the raven is quite popular in setting next to visitors on benches along the park and making this very beautiful sound that could only translate to 'food please'. Remember though, you leave nothing in the park and take nothing out of the park.

At the first section of the park, the Painted Desert is featured. With colorful rocks formations and sand that creates a painted look to the landscape, it's difficult not to sit and examine for hours. It's a beautiful place.

Before you cross I-40 to continue into the park further, stop and move into a small corner to your right. There is a rusted car, and if you look to your west and east, you will notice a line of small old telephone poles.
