"THE place to visit in Spain." Granada by unaS

Do it!

Bus from Seville to Granada. As everywhere in Spain the bus ticket that I ordered online and printed out worked just fine. I went to the ticket window and the clerk there wrote the platform number on it for me. Had breakfast at the restaurant next door to the bus station. Nice place.

Easy comfortable trip. Visited the Tourist Info Office at the bus station on arrival. Not organized but very nice, helpful staff. They arranged an evening Flamenco show with a guided evening tour of Albaycin and a view of the Al Hambra lit up at night.

Had some problems with the Hostal I had reserved in advance. Details in tips.

The HOHO bus here is worthwhile.

Weather has turned chilly! Luckily while walking I found a store with a 20% discount sale on sweaters. Ran in and bought one!

Some very nice walks on back streets. Narrow, sidewalks that disappear and reappear around curves, small interesting shops, and many little internet shops.

Found another Tourist Info Office on Plaza Nueva. Got a better map there and some good suggestions of what to visit.

Took a l-o-o-o-ng walk up to Albaycin. Too tired to walk back. Took a bus back to Gran Via and ate at Fres Co. Took a long shower and collapsed. Slept till it was time to leave for the Flamenco show.

The organized trip that I arranged at the Tourist Office picked me up at the door of the hostal in a mini van. We were driven up to Albaycin. Had a nice guided walk around which culminated in a 20 minute stop at the look out point opposite the lit-up walls of the Al Hambra. Lovely.

Then on to the Flamenco show - billed as a gypsy show in a cave, it was a tourist restaurant. The dancing was good. Included one complimentary drink. Dropped off at the end of the evening again at the door of the hostal.

Visited the Al Hambra, the Cathedral, walked up and down the Gran Via. Found a nice bookstore to buy Irving's "Tales of the Al Hambra". Took lots of photos of the Columbus statue, both from the street and from the top of the HOHO tourist bus :)

Wanted to visit the Museu De Larca but it was closed so no go. Had a pleasant walk around the park instead and shared my sandwich lunch with the fish. Quiet, green, relaxing.

All of the cities that I visited in Spain were clean and well cared for, but Granada is an exceptionally clean city. The street cleaners are everywhere - even standing outside on my balcony at 2 am I saw a man sweeping the street. He was followed some 10 minutes later by a man that opened the high pressure water system and hosed the street down. He also watered the flower beds and trees along the sidewalk.

On the Gran Via Colon the edges of the sidewalks are built up in a diagonal (to make a triangular shape) which is planted with trees and flowers. This provides both to help control jay-walking and makes the street very attractive.

Pros and Cons
  • Pros:Clean, friendly, easy to move around and just beautiful.
  • Cons:Hilly
  • In a nutshell:Granada is a comfortable city. Easy to find one's way around.

The bus tour and the museum look interesting to visit. You did a nice job of describing the sites and the pictures are nice.

I especially like your description of the flamenco show, with the older dancer losing all her tiredness as soon as she started to dance. Grenada was much less crowded when I was there, but that was 47 years ago in the middle of winter.

Good info here! The Flamenco show sounded good & reasonably priced. Pity your accommodation was bad.

Great tip on the Flamenco show & also how handy the HOHO bus is! Wow, that hostal thing really is quite a scam! Excellent tips on train travel & the restaurants too. I hope you feel seeing the Alhambra was worth the hostal set-backs! My wife & I loved it.

Excellent Allhambra tip. Bags of useful info and I think you're absoltely right not to attempt to write about the building: certainly the most stunning building I have ever seen. Truly beyond words.
