From the Airport to Jerusalem

The question of how to get to Jerusalem from Ben Gurion airport seems to be a common one on the forums, so here are some hints:

1. A private taxi will cost ~US$65 - US$70 to the center of town, depending on hour, day of the week and amount/size of luggage. From there to your exact destination is additional.

2. The bus is a slow local, stops at all of the towns, villages and settlements on the way. It does not travel directly to Jerusalem. You must change at the Kfar Truman interchange. Is suitable for local employees and the poorest backpackers.

3. The best way is to use the Nesher sherut (pronounced sher-oot).
This is a group taxi that goes door-to-door, dropping each passenger off in turn. It runs 24/7, including Shabbat. The cost as of today's date (10/10/09) is NIS 50.00 (~US$16.00) to one's home address.

Drawbacks:
a. The van carries 10 people. You never know if you will be the first off or the last. The driver plans his route each time according to the destinations of the passengers.

b. If your flight lands at an inconvenient hour (not many planes landing at the same hour) you may have to wait some time for the sherut to fill up. If there are Israelis travelling at the same time they may suggest paying for a couple of empty seats between all of the passengers, thus letting the sherut leave with only 8 passengers.

FYI: The airport is not in Tel Aviv. It is on the road between TA and Jerusalem. If driving direct it is 20 - 25 minutes from the airport to Jerusalem.

When leaving from Jerusalem for the airport always call Nesher 24 hours in advance to arrange for the van to pick you up.
Tel.: 625 72 27. If calling from outside of Jerusalem add the area code 02 in front of the number.
