Coba is much like Calakmul in that its a lesser known Mayan site with a lot of rustic charm. Much like Calakmul one of the benefits of visitng Coba is the fact you can climb the main pyramid and you don't have to worry about fighting the crowds. However unlike Calakmul, Coba is much easier to visit which would explain why so many more people visit Coba rather than Calakmul. Visiting Coba can be done in a couple of hours if you just feel like climbing the main Pyramid and taking a few pictures, but the site itself is big enough that you could spend an entire day wandering around the dense jungle site. The jungle is still wound tightly around many of the structures in Coba which gives it a very authentic vibe. The site is so spread out that you could walk 15 or 20 minutes in any direction before you see another structure, which gives the feeling of discovery when you do come across another ruin. There are many souvenier stands and places to eat around the site which gives it a carnival atmosphere. However the smell of homemade BBQ chicken in the air after spending a afternoon walking in Coba will bring additional satisfaction to your day in the park! Be sure to indulge yourself in both the chicken and Coba, its well worth it!
