birding by panga in San Blas

birding in San Blas mexico

The town of San Blas is about 80 miles north of Puerto Vallarta and is a great birding destination in the winter but be aware that the no-see-um's (jejune) thrive there too. bring the deet and benadryl.
Isla Isabella, looking west towards the navigation

Isla Isabella

the Galapagos of the west coast of mexico....A small, maybe 1 square mile volcanic cone island sitting 30 miles off Mexico's west coast near San Blas, great nesting site for thousands of boobies, brown and blue foot, and frigate birds...and the best snorkeling on the west coast of mexico. humpback whales surround the island from late December to February, the ocean is often alive with breaching and tail slapping whales. there is a small settlement of Mexican fisherman living on the island and usually a biologist from Canada or mexico city doing field research and living, camping at the never finished government conservation building. Drop your anchor and explore awhile.
