Wrightsville Beach is a pleasant retreat from the pressures and demands of everyday life. The area we stayed, close to the main shopping area and the bridge to the mainland was a wonderful community of vacationers and local residents. It isn't necessart to take a car to get groceries at the store around the corner, or to go to one of the many close by restaurants, or to explore the shops downtown or stop for an ice cream.
The house [SEE PHOTO] our best friends rented on Wrightsville Beach, a few miles south of Wilmington, NC exerted a strong influence on the people who stayed there for a week to attend a wedding. Built in 1940, the house has a kitchen and living room plus two bedrooms on the first floor and three bedrooms on the second. It also has a porch that runs along the side and the front of the house, facing the beach.
The porch became the meeting place, all during the week for family members and friends - even those staying at two other locations. Family stories, jokes and a lot of good conversation took place there.
It was a friendly house, food and supplies were already there and each group that stayed there replaced what supplies they used to keep it going for the next group staying there.
There was a diary in the house which had entries by many of the people who stayed there, all during the year. One story in particular, about being there during a hurricane, was especially interesting. The hurricane passed close by and the people were frightened but did not leave. They suffered through power outages, food shortages, cold, rain leaking in and general discomfort, but they felt they were also protecting the house and at the end of the stay they really felt closer to each other and to the house as well.
"1 Corinthians 4:1. This is how one should regard us, as servants of Christ and stewarts of the mysteries of God."
We are here but a short time and we are stewards of our homes, our neighborhoods, and our communities. We should endeavour to leave them in better shape than we found them.
