The beautiful lighthouse at Rubjerg once stood by the sea, proudly serving mariners in their hour of need. Generations of lighthouse keepers lived there with their families and all was well until, over a long period of time, sand began to build up between the lighthouse and the sea. Higher and higher grew the wall of sand until, eventually, the lantern was obscured by it and the light could not be seen where it was needed. In vain, a large amount of sand was removed from the top of the ever-increasing sand dune until eventually it was decided to abandon the lighthouse. The light was removed and today the station is still fighting back the sand. some of the buildings are almost engulfed |
